The Australian Kookaburra silver coin gets a new design every year. It has been the epitome of longevity among the bullion programs of the Perth Royal Mint. The design of the coin takes on the laughing Kookaburra – a member of the kingfisher bird species, synonymous with the Australian outback.
The obverse of the coin features Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II, the fourth coinage portrait by Ian Rank-Brodley. The obverse also features the coin denomination, which is 10 Australian dollars.
The reverse of the coin depicts the kookaburra taking flight against the background of a moonlit sky. The kookaburra is well-known around Australia for its unique call that many say resembles human laughter, the cheeky look in the kookaburra’s eye being the designer’s way of subtly hinting towards that.
This is the 28th design of the series since it was initially conceived in 1990, with the idea of redesigning native species becoming so popular that it has spread to other coin series. The coin is struck from 99.99% pure silver, the first time for this particular series.
