The Silver Lunar Year of the Dog 2018 is the fifth coin to come out of The Royal Mint Shēngxiào Collection. The design of the coin by the UK-based designer, Wuon-Gean Ho, is inspired by millennia of Chinese tradition, and it’s a part of a series celebrating the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac and their distinctive traits and qualities.
The obverse of the coin features Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II, the definitive fifth coinage portrait of Her Majesty The Queen, designed by Jody Clark. The obverse also features the coin denomination, which is 2 British pounds, and a new guilloche background design.
The reverse of the coin features a terrier mid-run, with its ears back and its mouth open. The background design furthers the elements of the run. The overall design merges British tradition and Chinese culture.
Each mintage incorporates the number 8, which is believed to be lucky in Chinese culture. The coin is struck from 99.99% pure silver, and is also available as a one ounce gold edition.
