The Silver Lunar Year of the Dog 2018 is the latest coin to come out of The Perth Mint’s in the Lunar Series. The design of the coin by the Perth Mint designer, Ing Ing Jong, is inspired by millennia of Chinese tradition, and it’s a part of a series celebrating the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac and their distinctive traits and qualities.
The obverse of the coin features Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II, the fourth coinage portrait by Ian Rank-Brodley. While it was replaced on UK coins in 2015, the Perth Mint kept this version of the portrait so that all coins in the Lunar series have matching obverse design. The obverse also features the coin denomination, which is 2 British pounds.
The reverse of the coin features a German shepherd and its puppy, lying in the grass. The Chinese character for ‘dog’ is placed on top of peony flowers – the unofficial Chinese national flower, rich in cultural and traditional symbolism, representing both beauty and wealth. The traditional P mintmark of the Royal Mint in Perth has been added to the design as well.
This is the eleventh and penultimate coin of the Lunar series. The coin
