The first issuance of the coin Niue Hawksbill Turtle is in 2014. It has been issued by the New Zealand Mint and it is 1 ounce, with purity of silver 999/1000. This coin is part of the series of silver coins Taku, which have also been issued by the New Zealand Mint.
The design of the coin has been dedicated exclusively to the beautiful Niue Hawksbill Turtle, which inhabit the tropical waters of the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. This specie of turtles prefers coast lines and coral reefs, where they find mushrooms, which is the main source of food for these omnivores, and they migrate to New Zealand every year from the Fiji islands.
Similar to many sea turtles, the Niue Hawksbill Turtle is a critically endangered species, which is caused mostly by anthropogenic impact. Despite the international status as protected species, these turtles are frequently killed for their dazzling shells, which are very valuable, and are used to develop decorative turtles.
The obverse side of the coin depicts a portrait of Elizabeth II. The outside ring of the coin has an inscription “Elizabeth II”, “Niue“, the face value of “2 Dollars”, and the year of emission: 2016.
The reverse side of the coin depicts Niue Hawksbill Turtle. The external upper ring of the coin has an inscription “Turtle”, and the lower part depicts the purity of silver 999/1000 and the value of the coin: “Fine Silver 999 1 oz”.
