The initial introduction of this coin was in 1999 as a Zambian Silver Elephant. The Bavarian State Mint later changed the nation of issue for the coins to Somalia in 2004, and the coin has been steadily gaining popularity since then.
Every year the design changes which makes this coin very attractive and desirable to collectors and investors.
The design always includes the elephant, but it is depicted in a variety of scenes and can also present multiple elephants. This year’s design focuses on the head of the African bush elephant. Set in right-profile relief, the elephant uses its trunk to pull down a tree branch in order to feed itself. Above the image is written ‘AFRICAN WILDLIFE’ indicating it is part of the African Wildlife series. At the bottom is ‘ELEPHANT and “1oz Ag 999.9”
